This week marks the Annual National Police Week, taking place in Washington D.C. and honoring fallen police officers, as well as those who still serve and protect us. May 15th is the 50th Annual Peace Officer Memorial Day, which always lands somewhere during National Police Week. This is a weeklong event with occurrences such as a candlelight vigil, seminars, honor guard competition, a 5K and tent sales. The candlelight vigil will take place at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C., which stands as a monument to officers who have died in the line of duty. The Wall includes the names of more than 19,000 officers and K9’s including 441 from New Jersey. For more statistics and information on how to donate please visit the Officer Down memorial page. The event attracts police officers and their families from all over the country, as well as internationally, to our nation’s capital. 25,000 to 40,000 people are scheduled to show up for the annual event. The Washington Nationals are also hosting a National Police Memorial Night with partial proceeds from the evening going to the National Fraternal order of Police Foundation.

National Police Week is also hosting the arrival of the Police Unity Tour. The tours purpose is to raise the awareness of Law Enforcement Officers who have died in the line of duty and raise funds for the National Law enforcement Officers memorial. Officers from the New Jersey area pedaled out of Newark, NJ on May 9th to ride their bicycles for four days, eventually ending at the memorial in Washington D.C on May 15th.

Samzie’s would like to honor our valued customers and those who serve and protect us as well. Our thoughts are especially with Falls Twp PD Officer Matt Killeen. Matt suffered extensive injuries after he was involved in a crash early Friday morning when his patrol vehicle was struck head on by a car that crossed over the center line. Please visit here for more information on the accident.

It is very easy to forget and take advantage of everything our police forces do for us, and much of the time they go without thanks. This week is a time to give our officers those extra thanks they deserve. In honor of National Police Week and to show our appreciation, mention promo code POLICEWEEK2012 and receive 25% off your next online purchase at samziesonline.com. National Police Week 2012 is encouraging citizens to “fly the blue”, by adding a blue ribbon to your vehicle antenna during National Police Week; honoring those who have fallen.

Police, Firefighters, EMT’s and volunteers all gathered at the National Guard Facility of Mercer County Airport to aid in the send off of over 100 children making their way to the place where dreams come true.

People gathered around 6 am Tuesday morning to celebrate the childrens’ takeoff. The “Master of Entertainment,” playing crowd favorites such as the YMCA and the cupid shuffle, was on hand to DJ the pre-flight party. Along with the DJ was the Scottish band, Tucker, who performed multiple songs for the audience. The Philly Phanatic, Boomer, The Rider Bronc, Disney characters, and many other mascots entertained the bubbly crowd. The staff of Samzie’s Uniforms volunteered and was on hand showing support throughout the mornings affairs. (video)

Around 7 am, the crowd of volunteers and well wishers made their way outside to bid farewell to the plane that was being loaded with many excited children and chaperons. The Ewing High School marching band played continuously throughout the loading and takeoff process which finally occurred around 8am.

The Sunshine Foundation organizes the Dreamlift program that enables chronically ill, physically challenged and abused children to spend a day in Disney World. It is a non-profit organization whose mission statements quotes it’s “sole purpose is to answer the dreams of chronically ill, seriously ill, physically challenged and abused children ages three to eighteen, whose families cannot fulfill their requests due to financial strain that the child’s illness may cause.” There are many ways to help and donate to the Sunshine Foundation and its many programs. All of the information of how to donate is located on their website. http://sunshinefoundation.org/waystohelp.html

-Taken from The Democrat in Flemington NJ, 1981

Samzie’s, a Flemington mainstay for just short of 40 years, will close the doors of its Main Street store for the last time today.

When the late Samuel Zelansky, the original “Sam Z,” founded the business in 1942, it was known as an Army-Navy store where workclothes were sold.

The “Army-Navy” name was strictly generic, according to Joseph Belets, Zelansky’s son-in-law and former owner, “because we never had any surplus or second-hand merchandise.”

“We catered to farmers,” he adds, “who came to town in droves to go to the egg market.” The store’s busiest hours in those days were between 8 o’clock in the morning and noon, he says.

Over the years, the character of Flemington and the world in general changed, “and we had to go with the times,” Belets says, so sportswear and accessories were added as the store itself expanded.

As if to come full circle, the Main Street store had again become a workclothes and uniform store in 1977, when Samzie’s opened a menswear shop in the Flemington Mall. And just incidentally, yesteryear’s utilitarian denim work pants became today’s fashion boom.

The store in the mall will remain, emphasizes Pauline Belets; only the workclothes-uniform shop will move from Flemington to Ewing Township. A number of Samzie’s customers for those lines are in the Trenton area, her husband adds.

As it always has been, Samzie’s is a family business. Reba Zelansky, widow of the founder, still is actively involved, along with Joseph and Pauline Belets and their son Jeff and their son-in-law Paul Warren.

“We’re training the grandchildren right now,” Belets says, but he quickly adds that they are barely school age.

The family is sad to leave Main Street, Belets says, and apparently many customers share their feeling. Their tears have been shed especially as they bade “good-bye” to Mrs. Zelansky, he says.

“We really regret leaving Main Street,” Mrs. Belets said this week, “but we will continue our good image in the community
